365news gathered that On Sunday, a split faction known as New Afenifere emerged, further escalating the turmoil affecting the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere.
The organisation was introduced when its leaders met on Sunday in Lagos State with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the NNPP’s presidential candidate.
The faction backed Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State, claiming that given his track record, he has a greater ability to devastate the country.
When Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the acting Afenifere leader, backed Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party, there was a rift within the organization.
Some stakeholders of the group also purportedly endorsed the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2023 election.
However, Coordinator of the New Afenifere, Comrade Ajibade Adeyeye, stated yesterday that his group chose to identify with the NNPP presidential candidate, stressing that they are old enough to make their own decisions.
“The new Afenifere hereby states that we are concerned with the socio-political umbrella known as new Afenifere and I dare say we have decided to take our future into our hands to prepare for the upcoming 2023 election.
“We have called on our elder statesmen not to impose on us anyone but to allow us to choose our preferred presidential candidate because we believe we are old enough to make decisions for ourselves and for our future.
“So, on behalf of the New Afenifere, we have decided to forge ahead and endorse the candidature of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, together with his running mate, Bishop Isaac Idahosa to see toward a new Nigeria.”
