365NEWS gathered that the tragic stampede that claimed several lives during the distribution of palliatives in Anambra State on Saturday has been attributed to impatience among the crowd, according to an official who spoke to The Nation under condition of anonymity.
The official revealed that “many beneficiaries had arrived at the venue on Friday, spending the night at the entrance gate in anticipation of the event. By Saturday morning, over 50,000 people had gathered, not only from Okija but also from neighboring communities such as Ogbary, Ozubulu, Oba, Nnewi, and even parts of Imo State.
“The event was scheduled to start at 11 a.m., but by 8 a.m., the crowd at the gate was overwhelming. We decided to open the gate earlier to manage the situation,” the official said.
“However, instead of waiting for proper arrangements, everyone rushed in simultaneously, leading to the stampede.”
The source described the scene as chaotic, noting that some individuals who arrived on Friday rushed to the trailers and began taking rice and other items before the organizers could properly set up.
“The crowd was intimidating, and this unfortunate situation could have been avoided if there was more patience,” the official added.
The incident, which the official described as regrettable, has prompted organizers to reevaluate their approach.
“We’re going back to the drawing board to ensure this never happens again,” the source assured.
