Child marriage is a pressing issue in many parts of the world, including Africa.
It is defined as a marriage involving anyone under the age of 18. While international organizations have been fighting to end child marriage, it remains legal or widely practiced in some African countries.
In this article, we will examine countries where children are allowed to marry, according to the World Bank.
1. Niger
Niger holds the unfortunate record for the highest child marriage rate in the world. Over 76% of girls in Niger are married before the age of 18. Poverty, cultural norms, and lack of education drive this alarming statistic.
2. Chad
In Chad, child marriage is prevalent, with nearly 60% of girls married before 18. Like Niger, cultural practices and economic hardships push families to marry off their daughters at an early age.
3. Central African Republic (CAR)
The Central African Republic has one of the highest rates of child marriage in Africa, with 68% of girls married before turning 18. Civil conflict and poverty is a major cause of the problem.
4. Mozambique
In Mozambique, about 53% of girls are married before they turn 18. Early marriage is often seen as a way to alleviate economic pressures on families, especially in rural areas.
5. Ethiopia
While Ethiopia has made progress in reducing child marriage, it remains prevalent in rural areas, where cultural traditions and poverty persist.
Approximately 40% of girls are married before they reach 18.
The practice of child marriage persists in many African countries. While progress is being made, a collective effort is required from governments, organizations, and communities to ensure children can enjoy their childhood and build a brighter future.
