In today’s world, with advanced technology, it’s easier than ever for someone to spy on or track your phone. The reasons for tracking vary—whether it’s to access sensitive personal information, work-related details, or even your location.

Here’s how to detect if someone may be tracking or monitoring your phone and steps you can take to safeguard your privacy.

Signs your phone may be tapped

1. Unusual sounds during calls
If you hear faint voices, clicking sounds, or static during calls, someone could be listening in. While a poor signal may sometimes cause noise, repeated instances could mean that your phone is tapped.

2. Quick battery drain
Sudden drops in battery life, especially when your phone is idle, may signal spyware in the background. Spyware drains your battery by recording and transmitting data. You can check your battery usage to see if any unfamiliar apps are consuming power.

3. Unusual phone activity when idle
If your phone lights up on its own, reboots, or has apps opening and closing randomly, it might be a sign of malware. Frequent notifications in silent mode can also indicate that someone may have unauthorised access to your phone.

4. Slow shutdown times
If your phone takes longer than usual to shut down, it could be processing and transmitting data. This delay may suggest that your phone is sending information to a third party.

5. Websites Appear Differently
Malware can change how websites display on your phone, redirecting you to phishing sites. Be cautious if websites look different or ask for login details on familiar sites.

6. Overheating battery
A hot phone battery, even when not in use, could signal data transmission from spyware running in the background. If this occurs frequently, investigate further.

7. Strange text messages
Spyware sometimes sends coded texts to your phone to control it. If you see random strings of numbers or symbols in messages, this may mean someone is controlling your phone remotely.

8. Camera and microphone activation
If you notice the camera or microphone turning on without your input, this could indicate remote access. Many phones show an orange or green light when the camera or mic is active; take note if these indicators appear without reason.

9. Increased data usage
Spy apps often use large amounts of data to send information from your phone. Keep track of your data usage, as sudden increases could mean spyware is active.

10. Hidden apps
Spyware may appear as unfamiliar apps with generic names like “System Update.” Check for hidden or unknown apps, and delete any that seem suspicious.

Checking for spyware on Android and iPhoneIf you suspect your phone has spyware, follow these steps:

– On Android: Go to Settings > Applications > Permission Manager. Remove permissions for suspicious apps, then uninstall them.

– On iPhone: Spyware usually requires jailbreaking. If your iPhone is jailbroken, update the iOS to remove vulnerabilities and check for unfamiliar apps, deleting any that look suspicious.

Steps to reduce tracking risk

1. Keep software updated: Enable automatic updates to patch security gaps that malware may exploit.

2. Use secure messaging apps: apps with end-to-end encryption provide extra protection.

3. Install a VPN: A VPN encrypts your connection, making it harder for anyone to intercept your data.

4. Delete unused or suspicious apps: Regularly remove apps that you don’t use or seem questionable.

5. Use security software: Install a reputable security app to scan for malware and block tracking apps.

What to do if your phone is tapped

If you confirm your phone is tapped or hacked, follow these steps:

1. Turn on airplane mode: airplane mode stops all network connections, cutting off access to any spyware.

2. Perform a factory reset: This removes most spyware. Be sure to restore your phone only from a secure backup.

3. Restart in Safe Mode (Android/iPhone): This allows you to identify and remove problematic apps.

How to restart in safe mode

– On Android: Press and hold the power button, select “Reboot to safe mode,” and confirm.
– On iPhone: Turn off the device, then turn it back on while pressing the volume down button when the Apple logo appears.

By staying vigilant and following these steps, you can protect your device and personal information from unwanted tracking and potential threats.
