365NEWS has learned that On Saturday, further details emerged about how security agents rescued 20 abducted medical students and seven others in Benue State.
During the operation, which involved the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the police, one suspected kidnapper was killed, and two others were arrested.
The 20 students, from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, had been traveling to Enugu for a medical students’ convention when they were abducted.
The abduction sparked significant public outcry, prompting Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to deploy tactical operatives, including helicopters, drones, and tactical vehicles, for a swift rescue.
The rescue operation was coordinated by the National Security Adviser in Abuja and involved both land and air assets.
The students were tracked down in Ajide Forest, Ukwonyo Council Ward, Ado LGA of Benue State.
An officer involved in the operation reported that helicopters and ground teams located the captives on Friday.
As the kidnappers attempted to escape, one was neutralized, and two were captured.
The rescued students were transported to Abuja for medical checks and are expected to be reunited with their families by Monday or Tuesday.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, no ransom was paid for their release. He praised the security agencies and other stakeholders for their effective and professional efforts.
In reaction, the parents of one of the students, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Fagar, expressed relief and gratitude, noting that their son, Kingsley, had previously survived a similar ordeal.
The Fagars were overwhelmed by the support from friends and family and were eagerly awaiting their son’s return.
Sympathizers and well-wishers visited the homes of the rescued students, expressing joy and relief over their safe return.
The University of Maiduguri community also celebrated the release of their colleagues, with student leaders expressing gratitude to the security agencies and government for their efforts.
