Did You Know There’s A Country Where You’re Automatically An Organ Donor At 21?
365NEWS reports that In Singapore, all citizens aged 21 and above are automatically included in a mandatory organ donation program. This initiative was introduced to combat low donation rates despite the country’s advanced healthcare system.
This change, brought about by the Human Organ Transplant Act (HOTA) in 1987, shifted the process from a voluntary opt-in system to an opt-out system. Although individuals can still choose to opt out, doing so may result in a lower priority on transplant waiting lists.
