365NEWS gathered that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has blamed the collapse of the two-storey building in the Surulere area of the state on Wednesday’s heavy overnight rainfall.
LASEMA in a statement made available by the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, on Wednesday noted that no casualty was recorded in the incident.
Oke-Osanyintolu noted that the building situated on Adetola Street, Aguda Surulere, comprised six flats and eight shops with three units of five-bedroom and three units of three-bedroom flats.
He added, “Consequent upon the arrival of the response team at the incident scene, it was discovered that a residential cum commercial two-storey building partially collapsed from the front side of the structure. The building comprises six flats and eight shops. The six flats have three units of five bedroom and three units of three bedroom flats.
“Further investigation gathered at the incident scene revealed that the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday due to the downpour.
“Fortunately, nobody was trapped and no injuries were sustained because the distressed building gave signs and the occupants quickly evacuated unscathed.”
The LASEMA boss disclosed further that the building had been cordoned off to avert a secondary disaster from the partial collapse.
“The affected building has been cordoned off to avert a secondary incident. Post-disaster assessment of the incident scene is ongoing.”
Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency in a terse statement on its X.com page noted that the occupants of the building were able to escape unhurt after fleeing the building following their observation of a vibration the previous day.
“The incident which occurred at 3 am affected a distressed two-storey residential building. The building was empty at the time of the collapse because some residents noticed vibrations and immediately vacated it yesterday. No life was lost and no injury sustained,” NEMA noted.
